Tips For Preventing Weight Gain After Lap Band Surgery

Lap band surgery and weight loss immediately afterwards appeals to many people, especially those who are severely overweight. Individuals who are plagued by morbid obesity may see lap band surgery as a step in the right direction toward freedom. Once you get rid of the weight through the surgery, you will be able to exercise properly to help keep the weight off for good.

Lap band surgery alone will not make you lose the weight. In order to achieve the best results with lap band surgery and weight loss, it is important to follow the guidelines that are set by your health care professional. Such guidelines are reasonable and should be easy to follow.

In fact, the main reason bariatric patients gain weight after lap band surgery is associated with a lack of follow up with their surgeon, as Dr Ellner explains.

Immediately After Lap Band Surgery

Following lap band surgery, you should not expect to be eating normal food. A diet of all liquids is required for a minimum of one week after the surgery. Then, you can move on up to pureed food. Often times, after lap band surgery you will have to eat pureed foods for up to two weeks. Following this time, you will be able to ease back in to solid food.

In the weeks when you begin eating regular food after lap band surgery, you need to avoid certain foods, such as nuts, popcorn, some breads, dried fruits, coconut, pasta and fried food.

You doctor will recommend that you take your time eating, no matter how small the meal may be. Allow about thirty minutes to complete your meals. Eating too fast too soon after lap band surgery can lead to discomfort and ultimately weight gain. In addition, your doctor will recommend that you do not drink any liquids during your meals because it will move too quickly through your digestive system.

Months Following Lap Band Surgery

In the months after your lap band surgery, you should avoid foods that are high in fats and calories. In addition, you need to ensure that the foods you eat contain an adequate amount of minerals and vitamins. It is important to eat a variety of foods in order to get the nutrients you need.

When it comes to drinking liquids, you should continue to refrain from drinking during your meals. However, about an hour after a meal you should be fine to drink any liquids you desire. In fact, it is important to make sure you are drinking plenty of liquids in between your meals in order to keep your digestive system running efficiently.

It Is Important To Be Sensible

Lap band surgery and weight loss all comes down to eating the right kinds of food, abstaining from drinking during your meals, regular exercise and following the advice of a trusted health care professional.

If you need the lap band to be adjusted, do not be afraid to talk to your doctor. Your doctor will be able to make the necessary adjustments to promote optimum weight loss.

It is possible to gain weight following lap band surgery, and weight loss is always difficult to maintain. However, if you pay attention when you feel full and have the willpower to stop eating, exercise regularly and follow your doctor's advice, you will succeed.

Gaining Weight after Lapband

Hi ,\I;m in desperate need for some information on this asap. I had my surgery on Jan 18/2012 and managed to lose 17 lbs in Feb. However right after that I stopped completely. I actually gained a few pounds and thought that its normal because I started to eat solids. I am actually feeling satisfied when I eat and sometimes quite full sooner than usual but not anymore. I can eat and I am not feeling full. I stop because I don t want to push it but I m getting depressed because I thoguht that maybe I just need another fill. I had my first done in March and felt nothing still hungry. Now in April I went for another and my doctor told me that I don t need one right now. He is content that I am losing gradually but I explained that I stopped losing and he said that its normal. He would rather give me another fill later on and gradually. He doesnt think I need one so quickly seeing that I only need to lose 20 lbs. So i left his office feeling worse. He claimes that i will lose that withing 6-8 months. What do I need to do to lose weight faster. I know the band is just a tool but it doesn t seem to be working for me at all anymore. I have stopped eating junk food, but sugar, salt soft drinks, and etc. Doctor actually told me that the body also need some fatty foods. So can someone please give me soe advise on what to do next. I am feeling very upset and grumpy with everyone. Thanks

Gaining Weight After Lapband

I had lapband surgery in February 2010 and have lost 105 pounds. I experienced weight gains along the way as well and got very discouraged. What I discovered during the periods of weight gain was I was eating things I shouldn't be and wasn't exercising enough. I only noticed this after I started to journal everything I put in my mouth and also journaled my daily exercise. Wow what a difference that made for me. Very often we get so caught up with our busy lives that we don't realize what goes into our mouths. A little bite here and there of this and that really makes a HUGE difference if we don't burn off the calories. I eat lots of veggies, meat (high fat meat also) and dairy. I do not eat pasta, bread, rice, sweets or starcy/high carb foods. This diet works very well for me and is also recommended by my bariatric doctor.

Never forget your band is just a tool. The rest is up to you. Eating right and exercise is the key to getting fit and staying that way for the rest of your life. I constantly remind myself I didn't go through all this for nothing. Keep your chin up, stay focused, learn to live with what you have and accomplish your goals. You can do it!
